5 Things to Consider before Installing a Pool Fence

So you installed a pool! That’s great. But now you need to start worrying about potential accidents, especially if you have little children running around the house. Fortunately, there is an easy solution to this problem. A pool fence keeps little children and pets out and prevents accidents from happening. However, pool fencing is a serious matter, and you should think things over beforehand. Here a few things you should consider before getting a pool fence installed:

Pool fences are continuously exposed to sunlight, water, chemicals and all kinds of weather conditions. Hence, the material of the fence must be able to withstand all these elements. The material must be strong, durable and easy to clean. Some of the popular materials for pool fences include iron, aluminum, wood, vinyl, chain-link, mesh and glass.

Most places have regulations as to the minimum measurements of a pool fence, and contractors have to build accordingly. If you happen to live in a place where there are no such regulations, here a few guidelines for you to follow. The fence must be at least 4.5 feet in height. The space between two pickets must be less than 4 inches. The lower horizontal rail must be no higher than 2 inches from the ground and the middle horizontal rail must be at least 45 inches above the lower horizontal rail.

Locking mechanism

The main purpose of installing a pool fence is to avoid accidents by preventing children and pets from entering the pool area. So, the gates must always be fitted with a self closing and self locking mechanism. The locks should also be child proof. A good idea is to make the gate open from the pool so that it doesn’t open when kids shove, push or play around the gate.

A major complaint most people have with pool fence is that it looks ugly. But the truth is that it doesn’t have to. If we are clever while selecting the material and positioning of the fence, it can blend in the background. Wood is a good option as it gives off a more natural look. Frameless glass fences are also quite popular since they are not quite as obvious as other fences. Another good alternative is to strategically place plants and other landscaping options to soften the look.

Removable pool fence

If you don’t want a permanent pool fence, you can also opt for a removable pool fence. Removable pool fences made from wrought iron or mesh are easily available. It ensures safety when required and can be removed when it is not necessary.

Keep these five things in mind when you get your pool fence installed.
